Naag Panchami Puja
Naag Panchami is celebrated to mark the victory of Lord Krishna over Kaliya Naag when he was traumatizing the people of Gokul with his venomous acts. Lord Krishna not only over powered Kaliya Naag but also danced while mounting on his head to show the people of Gokul how he has taken Kaaliya Naag under his influence. While dancing he left his foot marks on his head which Kaaliya Naag took as marks of servility. Garuda, the royal eagle and the vehicle of Lord Vishnu, who was considered the born nemesis of snakes and other reptiles did not kill Kaaliya Naag because of the presence of his Lord’s foot-steps on his head.
Due to this famous Hindu mythological snakes and serpents enjoyed a great mythological and religious position in Hindu Mythology. During the time of Nag Panchami rain water is filled in pits and holes, which makes snakes and other rodents to come out of their hiding places. Due to this, a significant increase in the cases of snake bites is often reported especially among people living in farm land areas.
To protect people from snake bites and to mark the victory of Lord Krishna over Kaaliya Naag the day is celebrated to appease snakes. People on this day offer milk to the snakes and request them not to bite anybody and shower their blessings on everyone. Devotees who worship Garuda on this day are also bestowed with his blessings.
