Gudi Padwa Puja
Gudi Padwa is the first day of the Chaitra Navratri, which also happens to be the first day of the Hindi Month New Year. Maharashtrians celebrate this day as Gudi Padwa and the day has very deep regional and cultural significance for them.
As per the Hindu mythology, Gudi Padwa is the day when Lord Brahma first created the universe after the great deluge. Apart from the long and ritualistic puja, which is performed as per the Maharashtrian tradition and starts early in the morning, the day is celebrated by decorating the ‘angan’ of the house with a colourful rangoli and a special kind of Gudi Flag. The Gudi flag includes a garland of flowers, neem leaves and mango leaves, an upturned silver or copper vessel and a piece of cloth.
The Gudi Padwa Puja is done to mark the beginning of a new year and ask almighty to keep showering his blessings on the devotees throughout the year.
